I’ve always used natural flea repellants on my dog, a pinch of garlic once a week and some Skin So Soft daily. Now she has fleas! I’m pretty sure my roommates dogs brought them in the house, I caught her spraying them with OFF! the other day. (Seriously, not kidding. Great way to torture your dog.) How can I get them out my carpets when she’s not using preventative?

Try to get your roomie to use repellent on her dog too: You’re always going to have fleas as long as the little pests have a host. And the dog will thank her (and you) for it. But not OFF!: That stuff is poisonous to the dog, who is going to lick it.
Next, close the dogs in a flea-free room such as the bathroom, then spread Borax on your carpet and furniture liberally. Start washing everything that is washable (bedding, curtains, etc). Don’t forget to move your furniture. After a minimum of 20 minutes, vacuum up the Borax. And keep vacuuming every day for at least 2 weeks, which is about the life cycle of a flea.

The best way to get rid of fleas is by vacuuming every day. Not only the carpets, but also the pet bed area and furniture (couch, chairs, ect). This is the cheapest and most effective way IMO. You need to talk to your room mate to start a preventative or the problem will always be there and you’ll never completely rid the home of them.
When we moved into our house the previous owners had untreated pets… So, a couple weeks with no one in the house and we had a full blown infestation! You could see them hopping on you by the 100’s! It was unreal….! So, I got 12 lbs. of baking soda from the wholesale store for about $5 and a 2 lb. box of iodized salt ($3) and mixed them together and sprinkled that liberally on the carpet… Left it on for a couple days… When I returned much less flea activity! I got my bagless vacuum and vacuumed like CRAZY for a few weeks…
I would empty my canister OUTSIDE or in the garage…. I also vacuumed my soft surfaces like couches, loveseats, chairs etc… Wash the dog bed….
Also so you aren’t overloading your pet with harsh chemicals you can wash him/her with ORIGINAL BLUE DAWN.. Just leave it on for a few minutes and be careful of eyes/ears… It really repels fleas..
Stuff your dogs bed with some cedar chips….

We brought a house that had fleas in the carpet, I thought by leaving it empty for a week they would die, but no, they can survive for weeks.
Stop it at the source, and get some none chemical spray so your dog wont get affected, and then lead to expensive vet bills….
I read using salt worked on your carpets. I did it and it worked for me. Not expensive or toxic, sprinkled it all over my carpets and let it sit while I was at work. Came home and vacumed everywhere, including my couch and chair. and repeated the process for about a week. Worked for me.
Vacuum very often – more than once a day! Keep flea powder on your carpets for a legnth of time before vacuuming it off.
Keep this routine- dont just do it when you see fleas.
Go to your vet and get some Frontline (or similar product). It stops the flea cycle and eventually they die.
Obviously it’s a good idea to bomb as well.
call the environment dept with your local council and they will send someone out to spray the house for you

Several boxes of baking soda
Brush
Vacuum cleaner
Several vacuum bags
Large freezer bags
Step1
Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet. You will want to use a generous amount.
Step2
Once the carpet is covered you will want to rub the baking soda into the carpet using a broom. You want to make sure the baking soda gets down to the base of the carpet where fleas are laying their eggs.
Step3
Leave the baking soda on the carpet for 48 hours and then vacuum thouroughly.
Step4
Once you are done vacuuming you will want to remove the vacuum bag and put it in a freezer bag. You will want to put the bag in the freezer for at least twenty four hours before throwing it in the garbage. This will ensure that the eggs can not hatch.
Step5
Repeat this entire process for a week to ensure the fleas are completely gone. It may seem time consuming, but it is much better then having to fumigate your entire house.

Another option for controlling fleas on your pet bedding, carpet and even in your yard is by using fossil shell flour commonly called diatamaceous earth or DE for short. You will want to make sure that you are using food grade DE.

Sprinkle the DE on your carpets, the pet bedding, even in your garden.

Sprinkling this in your home and outside will not only work by killing and repelling fleas, but it also works to repel other insects such as ants, aphids, mites, and other insects.

If you do not freeze the vacuum bag the eggs can still hatch and find there way back into your house.
You can take a handful of diatomaceous earth and rub it into the fur of the infested animal to naturally kill fleas.
If you do not treat the offending pet as well as the exterior of you home the fleas can and most likely will return.
